The main task carried out by the freight forwarder specialized in perishable cargo, is the proper treatment of it. Air transport of products that need to maintain at specific temperature has a high risk, due to the amount of dangerous points along the logistics chain that can threaten the cold chain. The load in origin, waiting time on the track for loading, which can be affected by weather conditions, the time in the hold (where temperature can oscillate from -18ºC to + 20ºC), or the waiting time at a warehouse, are examples of the strong external threats that merchandise has to endure.

It is very important to proper plan calculating flighting time, and also waiting times in transshipments, cut-offs before each flight, time needed for dispatch, etc.

There are different packaging solutions which include insulator, such as cardboard boxes with expanded polystyrene or with aluminium sheets. They are available in different sizes and, are usually enough to protect merchandise in direct flights if they are combined with some refrigerant material.

It is also called dry ice. It is carbon dioxide (CO2) in the solid state. Although dry ice does not leave residues, if it evaporates it is considered a dangerous good. This leads to higher freight rates and, moreover, not all airplanes are prepared for loading it.
