Open Tops
The open top container is usually used in maritime transport to export or import two types of merchandise:
- Merchandise that does not fit because it is too height (machinery for example).
- Merchandise that is very heavy and difficult to load dragging it, and needs to be loaded by a specific crane.
Measures of an open top container
The dimensions are normally measured in the Anglo-Saxon system (feet and inches), specifying the exterior dimensions and interior or useful dimensions. There are open top containers of 20 and 40 feet.
20 feet open top container
- • Anglo-Saxon system external dimensions: 20 ft long x 8 ft wide x 8 ft and 6 inch high
• International system exterior dimensions: 6,10 m long x 2,44 m wide x 2,59 m high
• Anglo-Saxon interior dimensions: 19 ft and 4 inch long x 7 ft and 9 inch wide x 7 feet and 10 inch high
• Internal dimensions of the international system: 5,898 m long x 2,352 m wide x 2,393 m high
40 feet open top container
• Anglo-Saxon system external dimensions: 40 ft long x 8 ft wide x 8 ft and 6 inch high
• International system exterior dimensions: 12,19 m long x 2,44 m wide x 2,59 m high
• Anglo-Saxon interior dimensions: 39 ft and 6 inch long x 7 ft and 9 inch wide x 7 feet and 10 inch high
• Internal dimensions of the international system: 12,025 m long x 2,352 m wide x 2,393 m high
